Review: Chase Mobile iPhone App

Have you ever wanted to deposit a check without going to the bank? If you have an iPhone, now you can!

Chase has released a mobile banking application for iPhone which allows you to do a handful of things including view account balance, transfer funds between accounts, send money to individuals, and most importantly deposit checks.

The Pitch
The television ad shows us a recently married couple taking pictures of their checks to deposit into their bank account with the money appearing instantly into their account. But that’s TV, it can’t be that simple can it?

In the real world, it’s simple, but not as fast.

How To: Deposit Checks
The process is easy. You endorse your check as you normally would. Then take photos of the front and back of the endorsed check using your iPhone’s camera. You’ll also type in the amount the check is for and double check the account and routing numbers which are scanned automatically from the check photo you take. Finally click submit and the images are sent to Chase for review and deposit.

Within minutes the checks do appear on your account. However, it still takes time for them to clear and appear on your available balance, approximately 2 days to be exact.

Bench Test
It did take several attempts to get the check images to clearly appear on my iPhone. The app warns you the images must be on a solid background (my kitchen table worked fine), cannot be blury, and must fit within the app’s blue box. I also had to reboot my iPhone as the app was crashing everytime I tried to take a photo.

The Bottom Line
Despite the 2 day wait time for the checks to clear, (which is typical for most banks anyway) THIS APP IS COOL and will definitely save you trips to the bank.

Requirements: Chase Bank Account, iPhone
Restrictions: $1,000 per day / $3,000 per week deposit limit.
App Cost: FREE
